The Becoming of Her

This poetry book creatively highlights the personal and vulnerable experiences of the traumas that have shaped who Deziana Torres is today. Through an ecological perspective, the book plays as an example of how people can be shaped by their environments from both home and institutional settings. She dig deep to highlight four different categories: Childhood, Education, Love, and Self Love; each highlights personal adversity in ways that are both inviting and reflective for others. Deziana also challenges her readers to utilize the writing activities to reflect on the thoughts, feelings, and emotions that arise from the poems in hopes to also encourage many to begin to reflect upon their own triggers. After each writing activity, readers can find breathing exercises to assist with emotion regulation and to encourage many to become present in the moment after reflection. With intention, for poems that may be triggering to some readers, she marks the title with an “*” to grant readers the opportunity to become self-aware of their current headspace.
